The Danger of Fascism: A Threat to Freedom and Democracy
There are reasons for Americans to feel apprehensive about Tuesday's election.
The election is Tuesday, and this is why I'm worried:
Fascism, authoritarianism, and nationalism take the stage as political systems. Picture a government where authority is concentrated in the hands of one leader or a small group, personal liberties are heavily restricted, and the emphasis is intensively placed upon pride and supremacy.
The inherent danger of fascism lies in its undermining of principles by silencing dissenting voices and centralizing power in the hands of a leader rather than fostering open debate and discourse among individuals with differing viewpoints. This lack of accountability can lead to practices such as censorship and oppression that infringe upon the freedom and autonomy of citizens throughout history.
Fascist regimes rely on conformity for their survival; individuals who deviate from the norm or challenge the system are viewed as adversaries. Face consequences such as censorship of voices and restrictions on freedoms that may escalate to violence at times. A recurring theme in history lessons on fascism in the 1900s, characterized by censorship tactics and strict oversight of citizens' livelihoods.
It has become a focus in the upcoming U.S. election for various reasons tied to America's core values of democracy, like freedom of speech and voting rights being at stake. Of course, many citizens uneasy about the current political climate have noticed this. Particular leaders and groups appear to be edging closer to authoritarianism by imposing strict regulations on education and media freedoms. These are far right-wing politicians who are also attempting to suppress voting access for some groups and fuel division among different segments of society based on differing opinions and ethnicities. Individuals like myself are apprehensive about our political climate and the upcoming election.
One of the most ominous symptoms of a movement toward fascism is selecting a minority group upon which blame is placed for the nation’s problems. The minority group becomes the enemy, targeted to unite and galvanize the masses. In this case, the minority group is illegal aliens who crossed the border from Venezuela and Haiti.
The topic is widely discussed as it touches upon the legislation in place and reflects the kind of nation the U.S.A. aims to become. Will we uphold principles safeguarding freedom and equality for all individuals, or are we moving towards a scenario where power is centralized among a select few?
In this election season, discussions on fascism go beyond rhetoric. They're about protecting our democratic values and ensuring that every person has a say in our society without far-right MAGA Republicans gaining excessive control or authority. In fact, they already exercise too much power in the Supreme Court and certain States.
Very well stated. Thank you. I’m restacking immediately.
Sadly, most Americans do not study history. If they were at all conscious of the way fascists worm their way into power, consolidate it, and rule thereafter, they would never consider another Trump presidency.
...or am I giving them too much credit? Given the rampant homophobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia, xenophobia, et al., perhaps they would embrace the cause no less passionately. One way or the other, we may rest assured that there will be violence after the elections on Tuesday.
