World Kindness Day, More Than Just a Day
Embracing Kindness as a Way of Life: It is November 13th
‘Kind Hearts are the Gardens’
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Kind hearts are the gardens,
Kind thoughts are the roots,
Kind words are the flowers,
Kind deeds are the fruits.
Take care of your garden,
And keep out the weeds,
Fill it with sunshine;
Kind words and kind deeds.
Kindness is more important in our current world, filled with wars and the ever-present danger of nuclear-armed nations. Fear, division, and distrust often dominate our conversations. Kindness might seem like a minor gesture in such a world of conflict and powerful weapons. Indeed, it's a powerful tool that unites people, bridges divides, and reminds us of our shared humanity.
When we show kindness, we stop seeing each other as strangers or opponents and instead recognize our shared hopes, dreams, and challenges. If we could see each other as fellow humans, we could start breaking down the hate and suspicion barriers leading to fighting. Conflicts often arise from an "us versus them" mindset, but kindness challenges that thinking. The message is: "Even if I don't know you or agree with everything you believe, I respect you as a fellow human being."
Amid warfare and strife, kindness often appears in surprising ways. It appears through acts of kindness of those who help refugees, peacekeepers, and other people. These actions light up the dark, showing that kindness is a strength, not a weakness. Individual acts of kindness, along with nations, leaders, and communities incorporating compassion and respect into their policies and actions, should be the focus of World Kindness Day.
With powerful countries possessing weapons that could harm our planet, kindness is crucial beyond brightening someone's day. It teaches humility, self-restraint, and respect for life. These are vital traits for those who hold power. By adopting these values, leaders are more inclined to pursue peaceful solutions, recognizing their decisions' impact on their people and humanity.
World Kindness Day reminds us that we all have a role to play. Our actions, no matter how small, can create waves of change. Choosing kindness improves our communities and contributes to a world where peace is attainable. By demonstrating that kindness can flourish even in the face of conflict and division, we show that a world valuing kindness may opt for peace instead of war and understanding instead of fear.
We must celebrate kindness on World Kindness Day, but its true significance lies in practicing it daily. Setting aside just one day for kindness is beneficial. Still, it offers only a moment to pause and appreciate the impact of simple, thoughtful actions. Transforming our lives and surroundings requires kindness to become a habit, deeply ingrained in our being, not a fleeting thought once a year.
Imagine how our communities could transform if kindness were part of our daily lives. Incorporating kindness into our routine creates a space where people feel appreciated, supported, and connected. Small, consistent acts of kindness accumulate over time, fostering a culture where everyone feels they belong. Making kindness a daily habit can foster trust, respect, and compassion, strengthening our bonds.
Like other skills, the more we practice kindness, the easier it becomes. We start to notice opportunities for kindness all around us, in our families, workplaces, and communities. Once kindness becomes a habit, we don't just aid others; we also train ourselves to spot the good in people, remain patient, and handle challenges. These qualities improve our relationships as friends, family, and neighbors and foster self-compassion.
Regularly practicing kindness prepares us for times of difficulty. Kindness can be a challenge. On hard days or in tough situations, being kind can help, whether in our lives or in the bigger picture. Daily acts of kindness allow us to react with understanding, even when everything feels too much or divided.
Thus, while World Kindness Day is a friendly reminder, it is only the start. We can show kindness daily and create a friendlier and more connected world. Making kindness a daily choice not only improves the lives of others but also makes our lives feel more complete and meaningful.
Hi Allan,
What a fitting message, especially in these tumultuous times! Every day should be World Kindness Day. You said it so well: "The message is: 'Even if I don't know you or agree with everything you believe, I respect you as a fellow human being.'" In the U.S., there is a real lack of kindness -- people are pulled into nastiness by political affiliations and other differences. But the truth is, we are all people who deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.
I wish kindness could exist everywhere and for everyone. There's another element to kindness that is scary: kind people can fall victim to hostile individuals taking advantage of their kindness. The singer Jewel, in her song "Hands," sings "In the end, only kindness matters." I think she is onto something.
I am thinking kindness is my new focus, I was to a degree, but there are many more ways to incorporate it into my life.
